Smoother and harder surface by Micropeening

Micropeening results in not just a smooth but also harder surface. In the figure below an example has been given for stainless steel 316.
It is clearly visible that rolling results in an increased hardness throughout the material, while micropeening only results in a hardened toplayer of 100 µm; of this 100 µm the outer 40 µm has acquired an increased hardness compared to the rolled specimen.
Micropeening thus results in a tough core with a wear resistant hard surface layer.
