Blasting

Blasting

Generally speaking one can say that blasting can be done either abrasively or non-abrasively. When abrasively blasting part of the original substrate is removed, while during non-abrasively blasting the surface is just mechanically cleaned. Rests of grease, rust, mill-scale and paint are removed while at the same time under well designed operating conditions a compressive stress is built up in the outer surface layer (shotpeening).

The two effects, cleaning and roughening of the surface (sometimes a must for better adhesion of paint layers or for a certain esthetical effect) depend  very much on the composition and roughness of the grit/shot and on the processing conditions like speed of blast material (dependent on the air pressure used) and angle of attack.

The desirable effect and thus the blasting method and blast material used, must comply with existing international standards and specifications, that are selected in intensive dialogue with the customer.
